Lifesong Ethiopia

Lifesong Ethiopia Advocates,

Please enjoy these two updates from Gary and Peggy, directors for Lifesong Ethiopia orphan care -

The plans for the new grade school in Ziway are finalized, the builder has been selected and the work has just begun.  The block wall or “fence” surrounding the property is also going up.  In Ethiopia towns, similar to other third world countries, a property usually has a secure fence surrounding it to mark its boundaries and to secure the contents on the inside from theft.

Lifesong for Orphans pays an elderly widow woman to make the injera used to feed the 300 children at school. She delivers the injera twice a week to the school on a horse cart.

Injera is the traditional Ethiopian bread that is made from a tiny grain called teff that is grown locally. Teff is naturally high in iron, fiber and calcium, which is really beneficial to the children’s diet.  The injera looks like a huge crepe that has bubbles in it, since it is made with a sourdough yeast starter which gives it a distinctive sour taste.  It is used as a base on the plate with the main dish added on top, usually as gravy. The meal is eaten by tearing off pieces of injera and scooping up the gravy with your fingers.

The children in the feeding program are taught to pray to Jesus and give thanks before their meal. This is a wonderful opportunity since not all of the children come from Christian homes.

Nursery School in the town on Adami Tulu: The kitchen and the dining facility at the Nursery School are getting close to being ready to feed the 55 nursery students a hot meal twice a day.

Plans are made to divide the Nursery School into two classes during the summer break recess.  There will be a room for nursery students and also lower kindergarten."

A muslim man turns to Jesus

We just received good news that flashes me back to our last trip to Ethiopia in September...

At one point in the trip we traveled to a remote muslim village. The leader of the village had been impressed with the Christians over time that he ended up giving away some of his land and property for a Christian church to be built on. He signed the deed and made it legal!

Not only that, he also sends his grandchildren to the Christian church. His reason why?... He says, "the Christians are perfect".  We all know that's not the case, but it testifies to the genuine and authentic lives these Ethiopian Christians are living!

While we were there, Kendall, felt moved to pray over this man (see picture)

This week we received an email from our missionary friends:

Dear Ones,

We have heard from two sources that the Muslim man that some of you prayed over out at the village has given his life to Jesus.  I have asked about it several different ways to verify it, and always the answer comes back that he truly has.  I thought you would be interested in that.

What an incredible blessing!

Today, the Bitner family from Indiana stopped by the Lifesong office to thank us for the matching grant that was provided to help bring home their three children from Ethiopia.

What they didn't understand was the joy they brought to this office today! Thank you Eric & Loretta for the joy you brought in our hearts today as we interacted with you and your 5 beautiful children!

Changed Lives...

"One Sunday during the 2007 football season, our oldest daughter Ryan blessed our ‘hot wings halftime meal’ with a prayer. ‘Dear God, even if my parents keep saying that they have to think about it… please show them their calling to adopt’. Wow, we thought we were thanking God for the wings!”

Thank you...

We couldn't help but share this heart felt thank you we recently received from the Couch family. Your donations make stories like this possible!

Dear Lifesong for Orphans,

We write you this note to express to you our deepest thanks for the matching grant to bring our newest little one home from Ethiopia. Our family has experienced the gospel lived out through the adoption of our two youngest and we are refreshed again through the process of our new adoption.

Thank you for your part in fulfilling God's plan for our family. May God continue to bless you for your important work in something so dear to HIS heart!

Thank you,

Montie and Sally Couch & family
