in small ways

Today in my Bible study I was reading through some of the Psalms.  I love that book, don’t you?  I love the truth it speaks to my soul when I am discouraged.  I love that it often gives my day much needed perspective.  I love that it exemplifies the imperfect, flawed love of man for his Savior, and the perfect, righteous love of his God.

This morning I read in Psalm 10:

Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless.  Surely you will listen to their cries and comfort them.  You will bring justice to the orphans and oppressed, so people can no longer terrify them.

And then in Psalm 12:

The Lord replies, “I have seen the violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor.  Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

The Lord’s promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over.  Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.  How the world we live in celebrates evil… not just excuses it… but celebrates it!  Sometimes I get discouraged.  Sometimes I get down right mad.  But aren’t you thankful that fixing the world is not up to us?  Aren’t you glad that our God sees the “violence done to the helpless” and hears the “groans of the poor?”  Aren’t you glad that He will “bring justice to the orphans and oppressed, so people can no longer terrify them?”

Boy, I am!

I am also thankful that He allows me to be a part of it… no matter how small.  And that He desires to use me… that He finds joy in showing His power through His church!

This winter I got to witness this power.  I saw people give through our Gifts of Purpose catalog, some big, but mostly in smaller amounts.  And you know what… we raised over $65,000 on behalf of the helpless, the poor, the orphan!

Sometimes I think, “I don’t want to give small... I want to wait until I can afford to give BIG and really make a difference.”  But I have personally witnessed God produce big returns on what little I have to give.  That’s the beauty of it.  We are not the ones who save here… He is!  He just wants us to get the blessing of being a part of it!

So here’s the thing… You can still give through Lifesong’s Gift of Purpose catalog… You can still give in honor of a loved one, for their birthday, anniversary, or just for fun.  Just click here and pick where you want to give!

Christmas is a Coming!

Hey all!
There's still time to purchase a gift of purpose before Christmas! (click here to go to the online catalog)
And as I think about this year's gift catalog, I'm reminded of the Taste of Heaven Cookbook.  As I'm reminded
of the cookbook, I can't help but get excited for this weeks...
And the most exciting thing about Thursday is that we're having our office Christmas party... which means, you'll get to find out about not 1... not 2...
but 3 recipes!
And in the spirit of Christmas I think we might just leave these as a surprise (i love Christmas surprises).
What kinds of goodies do you enjoy making for the yearly Christmas events you attend?

a gift with purpose

10-11 Gifts of Purpose from Lifesong for Orphans on Vimeo.

It’s that time of year again.  Holiday music rings through car stereos and store speaker systems.  Decorations and lights bring new life to homes across America.  Families gather together.  Malls fill with anxious shoppers in search of that one perfect gift for their loved ones.  It’s the season of love, joy and family.

As we celebrate the upcoming holidays with our families...  As we remember the birth of our Savior...  And as we enjoy the many traditions that come with the Christmas season, let us also remember those who won’t be celebrating this Christmas.

Remember the 147 million orphans worldwide who won’t receive a gift from a parent.  Remember the children living on the streets whose only Christmas wish is survival.

What if, this year, your family gave a gift that can’t fit under a tree?  What if this year you gave Christmas to a child in need?

Christmas in the form of…

  • Education
  • Food
  • Home
  • Adoption

This year join Lifesong for Orphans in giving a gift with purpose.  A gift that will speak Jesus to a child.

Introducing Lifesong’s 2010 Christmas Gifts of Purpose Catalog.  Tis the season to bring joy and purpose to orphans.

Meet Alvin

Alvin was born in a Liberian refugee camp in The Republic of Ghana, Africa.  His mother fled there during the civil war in Liberia.  Sadly, while she was in Ghana her family was killed in Liberia.  Alvin’s father died in the refugee camp before he was born.

In 2007, When Alvin was 4 years-old, he and his mother returned to Liberia.  There she began attending church and quit drinking.  Two years later, a few days before Christmas, she began vomiting and was admitted to a hospital with malaria.  Soon after, she died.

Alvin now lives at Lifesong Liberia's Master's Home of Champions.

You can help a child like Alvin. You can feed a child like Alvin.

Our goal is 70 people. $28 a month. One year commitment.

We have 44. 26 to go!

Will you join us in bringing joy and purpose to orphans?

Meet Quita

Quita is 5 years old.  During the disarmament time, rebels came to her village and took all the men, including her father.  She never saw her father again.  Later it was discovered that these men were taken to a bridge where they were shot and thrown into the river.

Her mother ran to the Salala district with the other villagers for refuge.   There she later got sick and became paralyzed.  Last year Quita’s mother died and Quita was taken to the Lifesong Liberia's Home of Champions.  When she grows up she wants to be a medical doctor and help children.

Isn't it amazing that at 5 years old she's thinking about how someday she can help other children?

How can we help children today?

We're asking for a monthly commitment of $28 for one year.

Twenty-eight dollars...

- eating out at that new restaurant

- the shirt you've had your eye on

- a date night to the movies

- those pillows that would just look sooo good on your sofa.

I won't lie, making this commitment will require some sacrifice.  But trust me.  The sacrifice is always worth the reward.

What can you sacrifice for a child like Quita?

Our goal is 70 people.  $28 a month.  One year commitment.

We have 36 commitments, 34 to go!

Join us in bringing joy and purpose to orphans!
